Navigating daily news in the digital age

How many hours per day do you use the Internet?

Have you ever tried to time it?

It seems like nearly every year, more and more can be accomplished online, and that includes news consumption.

The Demopolis Times site, www.demopolistimes.com, saw 108,494 pageviews last month. That’s a new high for us, and we’re on pace to eclipse that number again in June.

Our website is updated daily and serves as a great compliment to our printed product. Combined, they allow our readers access to news 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Our website is also interactive.

You can upload photos, submit news items and letters and even comment on stories.

Other than our website, the Times recently launched a daily news email. The email is sent to subscribers each weekday with the news of that day. It’s kind of like home delivery right to your inbox.

The email, which has been going strong for about three months, has been well received and is widely read. It is currently sent to more than 1,600 subscribers daily.

There is no cost to subscribe.

Just visit our website and enter your email in the yellow box on our homepage. Or, you can just send me an email, and I’ll be glad to add you to the list.

In addition to the daily news email, the Times also recently launched a daily “What’s for Lunch” email, which details lunch specials for local businesses that day. This is sent out each day by 10:30 a.m., which gives readers plenty of time to set their lunch plans.

It’s been an interesting time at your Demopolis Times as we navigate our way through increasing and improving our digital presence.

We hope that what we’ve been able to offer is satisfying your thirst for local news.

Rest assured that we’re aware of changing technologies daily and are working to see how we can incorporate that in Demopolis.

I look forward to the day you can download an application for your Smartphone that will direct you to the Times mobile website, which can already be found at m.demopolistimes.com.

That day is not yet here, but I feel strongly that it is coming.

Jason Cannon is the editor and publisher of The Demopolis Times.
