Joseph Floyd Lewis, age 94, of Gallion passed away on June 20, 2010, at Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital in Demopolis.
He was born on Nov. 26, 1915, to Pervy and Fannie Lewis of Carrollton, Ala. He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corporation and was a member of the United Mine Workers District 20 and Teamsters Local Union 612. He was a World War II Navy veteran and worked for Howard Hall Freight Line for 10 years before retiring from Schwerman Trucking in 1980 after 21 years of work with that company.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sons, Joseph Earl and Freddie Wayne Lewis; a brother, Willis Lewis; and two sisters, Beatrice McGovern and Inez Gaddis.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Eva Louise Lewis; a sister, Frances Deavers of Selma; two daughters, Patricia (Jerry) Hannah and Linda (Larry) Phillips, both of Demopolis; a son, Durwood (Virginia) Smith of Demopolis; 10 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, June 22, from 1 to 2 p.m. with services following at Fairhaven Baptist Church with the Rev. Allen Atkins and the Rev. Don Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Demopolis Memorial Gardens. Kirk Funeral Homes Demopolis Chapel is directing the services.
Pallbearers were Andy Phillips, Greg McPherson, David Thompson, Chris Weaver, Paul Croston, Johnny Smith, Jason Hannah and Justin Hannah. Honorary pallbearers were Dickie McPherson, Rob Mayton, Bill Manning, B.E. Riley, Don Spidle, Nick Fendley, Sinda Fendley, Jeremiah Dial, J.B. Warren, Gary Dixon, members of Southern Care Hospice, the second-floor staff of Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital; David Witherspoon and his Sunday school class, Dr. Ronnie Chu and his staff and Charles Lewis.
