Marking Year 2 in Demopolis

Published 10:13 pm Friday, June 25, 2010

My, how time flies.

By my calendar, my family and I celebrated my second year in Demopolis Tuesday. We arrived in late June 2008, unsure of the undertaking laid before us but were excited about the opportunity.

That excitement hasn’t wavered. Over the past two years, it’s only built more momentum.

Looking back over the past two years, you forget how so many things can change.

Thanks to a sour economy, many of those reflections have a sour tone. However, each bad turn simply makes room for a good opportunity.

My family and I have enjoyed getting to know many of you, and we look forward to getting to know those whose paths we may not yet have crossed.

I’m grateful that my oldest daughter, Lizzie, was able to begin her formal education at Westside Elementary School this past year. The school, under the capable leadership of Connie Brown and her staff, puts first-time parents of kindergartners at ease. I’m equally as excited at the prospect of our newest addition, now-two-week old Bradlee, beginning her academic career there.

We’re also looking forward to another milestone next week. Nearly one year ago, the Demopolis Times will celebrate the launching of its quarterly women’s magazine, ‘pink.’

The publication cycle will come full circle next week when the summer 2010 edition hits a newsstand or mailbox near you.

‘pink’ and it’s publication has been a lot of fun. I’ve always joked about how ironic it is that a Marengo County-based magazine geared toward women is written by three men.

Journalism knows no sex, I guess. Telling people’s stories, whether male or female, is all part of the job. If you tell interesting stories of interesting people, everyone will read it.

I think that testament holds true. I know many men who enthusiastically read ‘pink’ each quarter. I also look forward to its publication and appreciate the response and the following it has obtained locally.

It’s been a fun two years here in Demopolis and I hope for many more.
