The Demopolis High School cheerleading squad will kickoff its 2010 season with a handful of fundraising opportunities. The first of those is scheduled to begin Saturday at DHS Fan Day when the girls plan to sell T-shirts to benefit Anna-Coleman Yelverton.
“(The Universal Cheerleaders Association) has been encouraging cheerleaders to do community service,” Connie Boutwell, co-sponsor of the squad, said. “When I brought it up to the girls, that was the first thing they thought of.”
In addition to T-shirt sales, the girls have decided to further assist Anna-Coleman with the first Tiger home game of the season, a Sept. 3 engagement against Chilton County.
“All of the money we make off our spirit items at our first home game will go to her as well,” Boutwell added. “That also was (the cheerleaders’) idea.”
Other Demopolis cheerleader fundraisers include a cheer clinic in which the DHS squad will spend time at Westside and U.S. Jones Elementary schools where they will coach aspiring young cheerleaders.
The varsity squad will be at the U.S. Jones gymnasium from 3:30 p.m. until 5 p.m. Aug. 16 and 17 before moving on to the Westside gym Aug. 18 and 19. Girl participating in the clinic will then take part in a performance during the Aug. 20 Jamboree game between Demopolis and Sweet Water.
Girls wishing to participate must pre-register by Aug. 14. Cost for the clinic is $30 and all participants will receive a T-shirt. Forms will be available at DHS, U.S. Jones and Westside as well as Saturday’s Fan Day event.
The squad will also host its second annual womanless beauty pageant Aug. 14 at the DHS gym.
“The first time the cheerleaders did it was last year,” Boutwell said. “It’s only the football players. (The cheerleaders) dress them up and put wigs on them.” Reigning “queen” Neilson Renner will be on hand to crown the new Mr. DHS. The event begins at 7 p.m. and admission is $5.
The squad is under the guidance of first-year sponsors Boutwell and Leslie Gibbs.
“It’s been a good year so far,” Boutwell said. “We’ve been having a good time. We’re ready for football to start. Demopolis loves its football, cheerleaders included.”
