MONTICELLO, Ark. – The 10th-ranked University of West Alabama football team moved to 2-0 on the season with a 27-20 victory at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, the second straight over the Boll Weevils in the series.

Quarterback Deon Williams moved to third all-time in total offense and passing in the victory. The Tuscaloosa native completed 24 of 34 for 367 yards, including two touchdowns and an interception. The senior has thrown for 4,338 career yards and stands with 4,710 yards on total offense.

T-Ray Mitchell posted his first 100-yard rushing effort of the season with 119 yards on 29 carries. The Selma native also tallied two touchdowns on the night, including the difference in the contest. The freshman gave the Tigers a 14-point lead on his second TD scamper as he scooted across the goal line from a yard out.

Gerald Worsham finished the night with nine catches for 164 yards and two touchdowns to log his second straight 100-yard receiving night. The Birmingham junior wideout has hauled in 105 career catches and is nine receptions away from tying Lorenzo Graham for fourth all-time in receptions.

Gabe Poe led the UWA defense in tackles for the second consecutive outing. The Pheba, Miss. native tallied 11 tackles on the night.

The road win didn’t come easy for the Tigers as, following Mitchell’s one-yard run, UAM’s Jwyin Ceasar hauled in his 12th catch of the night, a six yard strike from Scott Buisson. The catch capped a short drive by the Weevils that was setup by a 45-yard punt return by the senior wide receiver.

Williams placed UWA on top, 20-13, with 7:30 remaining in the third quarter finding Worsham sprinting across the back of the endzone. The 12-yard strike capped a seven-play, 80-yard drive for the Red and White. The score answered a Nakita Myles three-yard run to knot the game at 13 all at the beginning of the quarter.

UAM struck the first blow, connecting on a 38-yard field goal by Taylor Pontius. The field goal was the second attempt of the night for Pontius after his first attempt was blocked on the Weevils opening drive.

The Tigers posted their first points on the board when Williams connected with Worsham from eight yards out. The PAT was missed, giving UWA a 6-3 lead. Mitchell extended the Tigers margin to 13-3 as he capped a seven-play, 76-yard drive scoring from four yards out.

The Weevils added a Pontius 30-yard field goal as time expired, narrowing the lead to 13-6 at the half.

West Alabama has an extensive break before returning to action on Saturday, Sept. 18 to open the home half of the 2010 schedule with NAIA member Lambuth. Kickoff at Tiger Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m.
