FAYETTE — Fayette County High football coach Waldon Tucker has an opportunity to go into the record books again Friday night. If his Tigers can beat Hayleyville, Tucker will leave the field as the all-time wins leader in Alabama high school football history.

Tucker is currently tied with Glenn Daniel for the distinction, achieving his 302nd win last week with a home victory over Tarrant High.

Tucker is in his 37th season as a head coach. In his 27th season at Fayette County High, Tucker has amassed 223 victories and a state championship for the Tigers. Tucker also notched 54 wins and a state title as the head coach at Gordo. He currently has 277 victories as an AHSAA coach, having recorded 25 of his wins in the AISA at the now defunct Demopolis Academy.

Tucker, who intends to retire at season’s end, will finish second all-time in AHSAA wins but has far fewer losses at 123 than does Daniel, who ended his career with a record of 302-167-16.

If Fayette County, currently No. 8 in the ASWA Class 4A poll, is unable to prevail over Hayleyville, Tucker’s next opportunity to clame the all-time record Alabama high school wins mark would come on the road against Gordo Sept. 24.
