Jason Cannon/The Demopolis Times -- Tom Boggs, Tony Speegle and Mike Grayson are excited about the lodging accommodations at the Demopolis Public Library.Thursday was a big day for the Marengo County Sports Hall of Fame.

The Hall was presented with a check for $3,000 from the Black Belt Community Foundation, which the Hall will use to purchase two additional display cases for honorees and trophies.

The Hall officially accepted the funds Thursday at the Demopolis Public Library, which was another step forward for the newly founded organization.

The library will serve as a temporary home to the Hall and its memorabilia until construction and renovation of the Marengo County Museum is completed.

“We’ll start putting our displays together as soon as possible Hall Director Tom Boggs said. “This arrangement allows us to display the trophies and the plaques of our honorees and it gives the public a place to come and enjoy it.”

The Hall presently has trophies and a display case, which was donated by the Clarence Brooker Family. That case houses the 11 plaques from the first two inductee classes.

Five additional honorees will be inducted Feb. 3 and a $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a local student athlete. The 1960 Thomaston Football Team will also be recognized.
