Tuesday, voters in Marengo County will head to their respective polling places and cast their ballots for an array of local and statewide offices and if history is any indication, voter turnout could be high.

Marengo County Probate Judge Cindy Neilson said 7,205 registered voters cast a ballot in the 2006 Gubernatorial election, placing voter turnout near 50 percent.

However, there is no clear indication that this year may see as much interest.

“I just haven’t heard much about this election cycle,” Neilson said of the lack of water cooler chatter surrounding the candidate pool. “The most I hear about is the county sheriff’s race and that’s really about it.”

Regardless of the amount of buzz the races have created, Neilson said it is typically difficult to gauge voter turnout before the polls open.

“Honestly, I don’t think it’s going to be as high as it was in 2006,” she noted, “but it wouldn’t surprise me if it was close. You just can never tell.”

Polls will open at 7 a.m. Tuesday and will close at 7 p.m.

Registered voters are asked to bring a form of identification with them to their polling place.
