Wilbur Holmes Atkeison, 93, of Demopolis, passed away Dec. 7 at his home.

He was born Nov. 22, 1917 in Atkeison (Clarke County) to the late Charles Aaron and Inez Givhan Atkeison.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 65 years, Betty Mullinnix Atkeison; daughter, Martha Atkeison Neilson; brother, Charles A. Atkeison, Jr.; sisters, Julia A. Compton and Lillian A. Batye.

Survivors include three daughters, Carolyn (Mem) Webb, of Demopolis; Sharon Lumpkin, of Birmingham and Susan (Tom) Prestwood, of Birmingham; 10 grandchildren, Dent (Lori) Neilson, Elizabeth (Andy) Renner, Caroline (Ralph) Hollowell, Rainer (Bert) Mullin, Stewart (Nicole) Webb, Brooks Lumpkin, Emily Lumpkin, Will Lumpkin, Betty (Duncan) McMillian and Katie (Scott) White; 12 gread-grandchildren, Neilson Renner, Sam Renner, Tripp Renner, Brooks Renner, Martha Hollowell, Mary Elizabeth Hollowell, Virginia Webb, Mem Webb III, Walker Atkeison Webb, Wynn Mullin, Mary Stewart and Henry Mullin.

Graveside funeral services will be held Dec. 9 at 11 a.m. at Riverside Cemetery in Demopolis with Dr. Arthur Luckie officiating and Kirk Funeral Homes Demopolis Chapel directing. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made in Mr. Atkeison’s memory to the Demopolis Public Library, 211 East Washington St., Demopolis, AL 36732 or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Active pallbearers will be Dent Neilson, Stewart Webb, Brooks Lumpkin, Will Lumpkin, Neilson Renner, Claud Neilson, Claud Neilson III, Sam Renner and Brooks Neilson.

Honorary pallbearers will be Fred Roemen, Dr. Ronnie Chu and his nurses and staff, Linde McAdams, CRNP, his friends at the Wellness Center, Dr. Anne Lewis, Dr. Charles Gross, Connie Lawson, Jackie Brooker, Bud Boone, Cleveland Cole and Zola Hawkins.

The family would like to thank the special ladies who cared for Mr. Atkeison in such a caring and loving way: Virginia Fields, Virginia Johnson, Ora Owens, Ann Foxhall and Sarah Harris.

Mr. Atkeison was a very successful merchant and businessman. He operated several grocery stores from 1946-1983 until he sold Food Fair, Inc. and retired.
