Tony Pittman’s Lady Tigers entered Friday night perfect and left the same way after a 62-28 thrashing of visiting Greenville.

Demopolis (6-0, 2-0) tore out of the great on a 10-0 run before Greenville scored its lone point of the first quarter with a free throw at the 3:16 mark.

GHS did not score again until the 6:53 mark in the second quarter when it added another free throw.

The first field goal of the game for Greenville came with 5:54 to play in the first half.

“Playing defense, limiting them to one shot and then making sure you get the rebound really tears a team down emotionally,” Pittman said.

His girls executed that strategy to near perfection Friday as six different Demopolis players grabbed at least five rebounds in the contest.

In all, Demopolis hauled in 49 rebounds on the night while holding Greenville to 10-for-33 from the field.

The Lady Tigers also picked Greenville pockets 25 times Friday night with a relentless pressure defense that fed their fast break offense.

“We put a lot of emphasis on defene this summe and the kids are really buying into what we’re trying to do defensively,” Pittman said.

Demopolis surged to a 17-1 lead after the first quarter and held serve in the second period to take a 30-14 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

The Lady Tigers proved incapable of putting the game away in the first half largely due to a rash of turnovers they committed in the second quarter.

Demopolis turned the ball over 15 times in the first 16 minutes of play.

In the second half, DHS settled down. The Lady Tigers committed only eight miscues in a second half that saw reserves play the majority of the minutes.

“We settled down and started doing what we wanted to do with the basketball and that really intensified our defense,” Pittman said.

Kierra Carter led the way offensively, scoring 20 points while also grabbing eight rebounds, dishing four assists and coming up with two steals.

Shadijiah Moore added 11 points to go along with four rebounds and three steals.

Tee Perkins had six points, six rebounds and five steals while

Jonniece Collins led the team with six thefts.

Breanna Jones anchored the rebounding effort with 10 before sitting most of the second half.

Demopolis saw every player log minutes and all but two of them score in the blowout.

“There’s room for improvement and I saw some things we really need to work on,” Pittman said. “But if we come in and work with the same attitude we had this week, I think we’ll be fine.”

The Lady Tigers play again next Friday night when they host Greensboro.
