While parts of Alabama were coping with upwards of 10 inches of snow, Marengo County dealt with mostly icing through Monday.

Reports of ice covered bridges and roads were the principle concern for the Demopolis area Sunday and most of the day Monday, Marengo County Emergency Management Director Kevin McKinney said.

“We got out Sunday and rocked all the bridges,” he said of spreading gravel to provide traction on the ice, “and we sanded all the state highways.”

Aside from a few traffic accidents, McKinney said Marengo County weathered winter storm 2011 relatively well.

“No problems at all, really,” he said. “We didn’t even lose power.”

Other parts of the state didn’t fair quite as well. Many schools and businesses in north Alabama remain closed through today as crews work to clear roadways and travel conditions.

With the approaching winter storm bearing down on Alabama, Governor Bob Riley on Sunday declared a state of emergency and the Alabama Department of Public Safety (DPS) has its officers working 12-hour shifts to assist motorists who insist on traveling, despite the expected dangerous road conditions.
