Former Demopolis High and current Carver (Columbus, Ga.) linebacker Michael Davis confirmed Tuesday night that he will offer his verbal commitment to Memphis.

Davis moved to Columbus along with his sister — his legal guardian — last year in order play out one more season of high school eligibility when his 19th birthday narrowly missed the AHSAA cutoff.

“I’m excited I made the choice that I did,” Davis said of leaving his lifelong Demopolis home. “People don’t get many chances. It was just wonderful that I made the decision. It was great to get one more year of high school and get the chance to play high school football again.”

Davis made the most of that opportunity during the 2010 season, earning postseason honors from the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer and landing scholarship offers from Oklahoma State, Kentucky, Georgia State and others.

“They’ve got a new head coach,” Davis said of Memphis head man Larry Porter. “From the looks of it, he is a good coach. He’s trying to build a program and that is something I want to be a part of. Hopefully by my sophomore year, they’ll be back to having a decent record.”

Davis, who led the Demopolis defense with 10 tackles in the 2009 Class 5A state title game, said Memphis also affords him an opportunity to make and impact and get on the field early.

“They told me if I get there and work, I can go in and start,” Davis, affectionately known by his friends as “Big Face” said.

Davis will give his verbal commitment to Memphis soon and will sign a letter of inten on National Signing Day Feb. 2.
