For parents of small children, a properly installed child safety seat can mean the difference between a vehicle accident and a tragedy.

A study released in October of last year showed that three of every four child safety seats inspected were improperly installed.

Pennsylvania State Police inspected more than 500 child safety seats at 68 checkpoints, and found three-quarters of them were improperly installed.

In an effort to combat that trend locally, the Demopolis Police Department has opened a Child Safety Seat Inspection Station.

“We have four certified technicians staffed to inspect your child safety seats,” Demopolis Police Chief Tommie Reese said. “You can bring your vehicle along with the child safety seat to Police Department and have technician look at your seat.”

The four officers were certified by Safe Kids Worldwide after taking, and completing, a three day certification course.

Reese said, ideally, expecting parents could bring their vehicle by the station and have the officer install the seat for them. However, officers will gladly inspect seats already installed and make any necessary corrections.

“If any problems are identified, the technician will show you how to correct and install properly,” Reese said.
