Edgar Cyrus Torbert Jr.

Mr. Edgar Cyrus Torbert Jr. passed away March 3, 2011, at DCH Regional Medical Center. Mr. Torbert was born in Greensboro on August 13, 1919, and graduated from Greensboro High School in 1937. He began working at Sledge Hardware in 1942 and later became a partner and manager in the same business until his retirement in 1991. Mr. Torbert served as Chief of the Greensboro Voluntary Fire Department for 18 years. He was active in the First United Methodist Church of Greensboro, including a 62-year stint as treasurer from 1949 until his death. Mr. Torbert served the church in a number of capacities and was a 16-year member of the trustees of the Demopolis District. In his younger years, he was a member of the Rotary Club, President of the Young Menís Civic Club, treasurer of the Salvation Army and Treasurer/Publicist of the Blackbelt Baseball League. Mr. Torbert was a beloved storyteller of the 20th Century people and events of Greensboro.

Mr. Torbert was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar Cyrus Torbert, Sr. and Lucille Johns Torbert; by his first wife, Virginia Walton Torbert, and by two grandchildren, William Edgar Torbert and James Russell Yeager.

Mr. Torbert is survived by his wife, Doris Yeager Torbert; his son, Dr. Edgar Cyrus Torbert III (Julia); his stepson Van Aubrey Yeager (Saswan) and four grandchildren, Samuel Burke Torbert, Aubrey Glen Yeager, Ian Daniel Yeager and Leona Sirinwabee Yeager.

The funeral service for Mr. Torbert will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 5 at the First United Methodist Church of Greensboro with the Reverend David Pierce and the Reverend John King officiating. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service. Burial will be in the Greensboro Cemetery. Kirk Funeral Homes Greensboro Chapel directing. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests gifts to the First United Methodist Church of Greensboro Youth Ministry in which Mr. Torbert took great pride and interest.

Pallbearers include Bubba Drury, Clark Yeager, will Sledge, Harris Coleman, Jr., Don Morris, Tommy Washburn, Dr. James Payne and Braz Barnette.
