LIVINGSTON – The University of West Alabama announced this week that Shelton State Community College has joined the Demopolis Higher Education Center to offer technical and workforce development programs.

“The University of West Alabama welcomes Shelton State as our partner in serving the needs of the City of Demopolis and area schools, business and industry,” said UWA President Richard D. Holland.

The City of Demopolis and local business and industry leaders have searched for a community college partner that could meet the needs of the area by offering technical programs that do not fall under UWA’s mission since Alabama Southern Community College’s departure from the partnership in 2009.

Dr. Freida Hill, Alabama Community College System chancellor, agreed that Shelton State is the logical institution to fill this role. UWA, the Center’s managing partner since 2009, and SSCC have a history of successful joint ventures, including truck driving and industrial technology programs.

Shelton State President Mark A. Heinrich, Ph.D. said, “In these challenging economic times, we are delighted to play a role in the development of this important aspect of education in West Alabama. It is imperative that we pursue cost-effective ways to deliver training and educational opportunities like those offered through the Demopolis Higher Education Center.”

Angelia Mance, Demopolis Higher Education Center director, says she is glad to have a familiar partner in Shelton State.

“Area students have a very positive impression of Shelton State and often express interest in the two-year technical and workforce programs they provide,” Mance said. “This partnership allows our Center to move closer to its original mission, serving as a consortium that brings a variety of offerings to our region. I’m pleased that UWA, as the managing partner, is able to increase educational opportunities in Demopolis and beyond.”

Shelton State is considering offering courses in electronics, welding, industrial maintenance and other technical fields.

According to UWA Provost Dr. David M. Taylor, the University will continue to offer academic courses, from basic curriculum to graduate courses, at the Center, while expanding the successful dual enrollment and continuing education programs.

The Demopolis Higher Education Center, constructed with federal funds, began as partnership among UWA, Auburn University, the University of Alabama and Alabama Southern Community College. Taylor adds that although UWA and Shelton State are now the only active partners, it is possible that AU and UA may offer services in the future.
