The biggest player on the Demopolis team did not take long to find a fit.

DHS junior offensive lineman Steven Foster committed to the University of South Alabama Monday evening after having received an offer from the upstart program over the weekend.

“I felt at home and I felt like I was at a place where they cared more about me as a person instead of me just out there playing football,” the 6-3, 285-pound Foster said of his commitment to the Jaguars.

“I think South is a program on the rise. I think they truly wanted Steve and respected him as a player and as a person,” Demopolis head coach Tom Causey said of the program’s appeal to the junior.

Foster has started at left tackle for the Tigers each of the last two seasons and projects to continue at that position at the next level.

At the University of South Alabama, Foster will take part in a program playing its first season of Division I, Football Bowl Subdivision competition during his freshman year.

“I’ve looked into it that we are going to get to play major programs in the Sun Belt Conference that have already established themselves and we’ll get to play some bigger programs that are in the SEC and some other conferences,” Foster said of the competition he will face while playing with the Jaguars.

“The facility is on the rise,” Causey said.

“They’ve got a quality coaching staff and a great academic environment for all majors.”

The commitment allows Foster, who has already qualified academically, to spend his energies focusing on self-improvement and team success during his senior season.

“It’s a burden lifted. I’m happy it’s over with,” Foster said.

“(My parents) are excited. It is a burden off of them.

“They don’t have to find a way to get me through college. It’s an exciting experience.”

Foster, who currently bench presses 335 pounds, squats 535 and power cleans 325, offered a laundry list of areas in which he feels he needs improvement before setting foot onto a collegiate field.

“Size, speed, strength, focus, mental toughness,” Foster said.

“Just keep working hard.”

Causey was complimentary of the junior’s potential, citing his belief that the offensive lineman’s future is bright.

“He’s extremely intelligent,” Causey said.

“I think his upside as a college football player is tremendous. I think his future is extremely bright.”

While the South Alabama offer is in the bag and he does not anticipate a change of heart, Foster said he will continue his camp attendance throughout the offseason.

“I do want to get some more camps in and get some more offers because things change,” Foster stated.

“They could come out and the whole (South Alabama) coaching staff could get fired.”
