LINDEN — Marengo Academy (19-5, 5-0) left little doubt in locking up the area title Thursday with a pair of dominating wins over rival Southern Academy.

The Longhorns opened with a 20-4 win in the first game of the double dip.

Matt Wallace toed the rubber for the Longhorns, striking out seven over four innings in a complete game win. Wallace also helped himself offensively, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI.

Matt Etheridge went 4-for-5 in the leadoff spot with a pair of runs scored and two RBI. Rabe Hale was 2-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI.

Mason Rogers went 1-for-3 with a double and four RBIs. Chris Sammons went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored.

Jacob Dunn was 2-for-2 with a double, three runs scored and an RBI. Jamey Clements went 2-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and two RBIs.

Kevin Pritchett was 3-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and three RBIs.

Trevor Johnson was 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Game two saw much of the same for the Longhorns as Marengo Academy handed Southern a 14-0 thrashing in five innings.

Rogers worked a complete game no-hitter for the win, striking out 10 batters in the process. The sophomore also went 1-for-2 with a double and two runs scored in the game.

Etheridge was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Hale went 1-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and a run scored.

Johnson went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Wallace was 2-for-2 with three RBIs, a double and a run scored.

Dunn went 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI while Devin Stroud went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

“Our kids played well all night. They went up tot the plate with a great deal of confidence and they really swung the bats well in both games,” Longhorn head coach Jonathan Lindsey said. “Matt Wallace pitched well. He has been one of our best pitchers all year and we hope to get more good performances out of him down the stretch through the playoffs. Mason Rogers pitched the best he has pitched all year as far as his ball-to-strike ratio. He really beat up the strike zone all night and kept the Southern hitters off balance.”
