Demopolis (29-8, 6-0) capped off an unbeaten area schedule and gave itself the opportunity to host the area tournament with a 7-2 win over Greenville Friday.

Greenville posted a run in each of the first and second innings to snatch an early 2-0 lead. Behind the pitching efforts of Courtney Myers, the GHS Lady Tigers held Demopolis scoreless until the fifth inning when untimely errors gave Demopolis an opportunity to get on the scoreboard in the fifth inning without the benefit of a hit.

The score led to a five-run rally that opened the floodgates for the Lady Tigers.

Demopolis added two more runs in the home half of the sixth inning to round out the scoring.

“We just slept walked through the whole game,” Demopolis head coach Todd Mathis said. “We were fortunate to win the game as ugly as we played.”

Despite the slow start his team put together, Mathis said the Lady Tigers never showed any signs of rolling over.

“They just kind of waited,” Mathis said of his players. “They never panicked.”

Madison Laduron (24-6) worked seven innings, striking out nine, walking four, surrendering three hits and allowing two runs in the game.

Kristin Beach went 2-for-4 out of the leadoff spot with two runs scored. Laduron went 1-for-2 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored.

Alex Crawford went 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored. Madison Bozmena walked and scored a run while Olivia Brame scored a run.

Demopolis plays again Saturday in Sweet Water during a round robin tournament that will also include Thomasville and Cordova.

“Just a hint of the fire that we had a couple weeks ago,” Mathis said of what he hopes to see out of his team. “I don’t want a repeat of (Friday).”
