Marengo Academy defeated Clarke Prep 10-3 Friday to clinch the No. 1 seed in Region 2 during the AISA Area Crossover at the Sports Plex.

The Longhorns gave up a first inning run before rallying four runs in each of the third and fourth innings and hanging two more on the board in the fifth.

“That guy that threw against us, he came out pitching well and we were able to touch him up a little bit the second time through the lineup,” Marengo Academy head coach Jonathan Lindsey said.

Jacob Dunn made the offensive effort stand up with six strong innings of work in

which he allowed three runs and five hits while striking out three in the win.

“Early Jacob struggled,” Lindsey said of the junior.

“But he’s the type pitcher that doesn’t let things get to him. He settled down and got the job done.”

Matt Etheridge wrapped up the game with a scoreless inning of work.

Etheridge went 1-for-2 with two walks, three runs scored and two stolen bases out of the leadoff spot for the Longhorns. Rabe Hale went 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBIs, a stolen base and two runs scored.

Chris Sammons went 2-for-4 with a triple, a run scored and five RBIs in the contest.

“He hasn’t been getting many pitches to hit this year and he was able to put a lot of good cuts on the ball today,” Lindsey said of the Longhorns’ all-state catcher, who shifted into the No. 3 spot in the lineup for Friday’s game.

Trevor Johnson went 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Mason Rogers went 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

Dunn and Matt Wallace each went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Kevin Pritchett walked twice, scored two runs and stole two bases in the win.

The Longhorns will play a double-header at Monroe Academy Saturday before hosting Lakeside in round one of the AISA Class AA playoffs Thursday at Scott Park in Linden.
