DHS to face Louisville in opener

Demopolis will open its 2011 season against Louisville (Miss.) as part of a double-header at Spain Park High School.

The game pits the Tigers against a new opponent rather than finishing the second half of a previously planned home-and-home series with Class 5A runner-up Briarwood Christian.

“Playing somebody different,” Demopolis head coach Tom Causey said of the game. “I think it’s a great opportunity for us to promote the City of Demopolis and Demopolis High School. It’s a great chance to play championship football with somebody from another state. It’s a great opportunity to promote our area.”

Louisville will provide the first test of the season for a Tiger team that will be replacing its quarterback, running back, two offensive linemen and a slew of starters on the defensive side of the ball.

As for what type of team the Tigers will be facing, Causey said he did not yet know specifics in terms of scheme but does believe DHS landed a high quality opponent.

“I plan to talk to their coach here in the next week or so,” Causey said. “I do know their coach was the head coach of the Mississippi team at the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game when we were down there in December. They are a perennial power in the state of Mississippi.”

Aside from changing opponents, the double-header also means Demopolis will have only four regular season games in the friendly confines of Tiger Stadium rather than the five that had been scheduled.

However, Causey did point out that the contractual guidelines of the double-header will allow the Tigers to at least make up for any potential financial losses they may suffer from giving up there home date.

“We’re going to get some percentages of money from Spain Park and from the gate that alleviate losing a home game,” Causey said.

The game, which is scheduled for 3 p.m Saturday, Aug. 27, will be followed by a contest between Spain Park and Noxubee High (Miss.).

The Tigers non-region schedule also includes a home game with Thomasville and a road test against Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa. Other home games include Central-Tuscaloosa, Paul Bryant and Brookwood.
