An April 27 tornado that caused damage in the Pinhook and Faunsdale area has been rated an EF-2 by the National Weather Service (NWS).

An EF-2 tornado brings with it sustained winds of 111 to 135 miles per hour.

A team of NWS surveyors found the damage to be continuous from extreme southeast Sumter County across central and northeast Marengo County. The storm eventually trekked into southeast Perry County.

“This very likely was a continuation of the tornado track from Clarke County, Miss. across northern Choctaw County into Sumter County, Marengo and Perry counties,” a NWS field surveyor wrote.

“This would be a total continuous track of 123 miles.”

The tornado moved into western Marengo County crossing the southern most portion of Old Locke 3 Road and passed just north of Linden near Pinhook and north of Chickasaw State Park.

The tornado continued northeast through Faunsdale, significantly damaging or destroying several homes and causing three injuries along Nash Road.

The storm eventually headed just north of Uniontown, crossing the intersection of highways 61 and 183. The tornado dissipated just east of Highway 183 in southwest Perry County.

The tornado that hit Marengo County was the 15th to touchdown April 27. In all, 19 tornadoes are believed to have touched down.
