UWA tennis extends win streak to 10

ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of West Alabama men’s tennis team extended its winning streak to 10 matches with wins over St. John’s and Florida Southern on Wednesday.

The 10-match winning streak leaves UWA with a 16-2 record. St. John’s dropped to 2-8 and Florida Southern is 9-7. The Tigers continue their Florida spring break tour Thursday in St. Petersburg against Eckerd College at 2 p.m.

The Tigers opened the day by defeating Division III St. John’s of Minnesota, 7-2, and then defeated Florida Southern, 6-3, in the afternoon. Florida Southern is ranked 29th in NCAA Division II.

“I felt like I was at March Madness and our men’s team was in the Final Four,” UWA head coach Glen Fanelli said. “We played outstanding, high-intensity tennis.”

West Alabama swept the doubles matches and won four singles matches in straight sets to knock off the Johnnies. Anton Ivanov, Kike Ruiz, Honorio Fernandez and Manuel Grossmann won singles. Ivanov and Adam Drysdale took No. 1 doubles, Simon Bardell and Grossmann won No. 2 doubles and Nestor Vargas and Ruiz took No. 3 doubles.

Fernandez and Grossmann, as well as Vargas and Ruiz won doubles matches to get the Tigers off to a good start against Florida Southern. Vargas, Ivanov, Ruiz and Bardell won their singles matches in straight sets to put the Moccasins away.

“Nestor Vargas was on fire in both singles and doubles against Florida Southern,” Fanelli said. “Anton Ivanov defeated the No. 34 singles player in the country (Emanuel Lueber) and then Kike Ruiz sealed the deal.”
