HUNTSVILLE – The West Alabama bats were swinging early as the Tigers jumped ahead of Alabama-Huntsville 2-0 in the first inning, but a season high of UWA errors lead to a 5-3 loss to Alabama-Huntsville at Charger Park on Sunday. It is the first three game Gulf South Conference sweep the Tigers have given up this season.

“When the game started we were locked in and ready to play,” said UWA head coach Gary Rundles.

“However, as the game went on we made some defensive mistakes. Unfortunately in this game you are going to have that, but if you’re season has gone like ours has it tends to magnify itself. From an offensive stand point we put ourselves in a position to win.”

West Alabama looked to have addressed its recent offensive woes as its first four leadoff batter’s reached base on three hits in the top of the first inning to jump to a 2-0 lead. However, the Tigers went on to give up four errors to fall to 21-24 on the season; 13-10 in the GSC. Alabama-Huntsville completed its second come from behind victory on the weekend to complete the series sweep over West Alabama to improve to 15-4-1 overall; 32-11-1 in conference.

UAH starting pitcher Alex Aultman (6-1) pitched through all nine innings to pick up the victory on the mound. Aultman allowed three runs, five hits and tallied six strikeouts. West Alabama burned through four pitchers with Steven Glasgow (0-3) taking the loss after pitching through three innings beginning in the fourth. Glasgow ended with three runs on three hits.

The Charger’s shortstop Blake Massey ended 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI. West Alabama leadoff batter Matthew Magee jumpstarted the Tiger offense with a double in his first at-bat. Magee ended 1-for-4 with one run.

West Alabama will now travel to take on Montevallo in its last road game of the regular season on Wednesday. The game is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Kermit A. Johnson Field.

“I still believe in this team,” said Rundles. “I believe that we are capable of big things, and if we can get our act together this week we can do some damage in the tournament. We can play with anybody if we do what we are capable of doing.”
