UWA softball sweeps Delta State

LIVINGSTON – A trio of West Alabama pitchers limited Delta State to just one run over two games on the way to sweeping the Lady Statesmen in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Sunday at the UWA Softball Complex. The Tigers won the opener, 5-1, and the second game, 4-0.
The sweep extends UWA’s winning streak to four games and improves the Tigers to 27-16 overall and 14-14 in GSC play. Delta State dropped to 16-31 and 8-20. West Alabama has the week off before hosting North Alabama on Senior Day Saturday at 2 p.m.
Sarah Ray (16-6) went the distance for UWA to earn the win in first game, allowing just four hits and striking out five. Miller Maddox (3-8) took the loss, allowing four hits and all five runs, four earned.
Ashley Osier (4-0) and Jessica Brock combined on a four-hit shutout in the second game. Brock worked three scoreless innings for her first save. Brittany Gonzales (9-13) absorbed the loss, allowing four runs and five hits in four innings of work.
UWA was efficient in game one, using five hits to produce five runs. Michael Robertson was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in for the Tigers, including her seventh home run of the season, a solo shot in the fifth inning.
Stephanie Shoup hit her fifth home run, a two-run shot over the batter’s eye in center field, to lead the UWA offense in game two. Osier helped herself with a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth. The Tigers used just five hits to score four runs in the second game.
Mariah Alvarez and Memrie Corley had two hits in the doubleheader for Delta State, who managed just one extra base hit in the two games.
