YOUNG SURVIVOR: Coleman has been in remission for two years

People in the community should be no stranger to the contagious laugh and infectious smile of young Anna-Coleman Yelverton.
Yelverton has battled “rhabdomyosarcoma,” a form of cancer. She has recently celebrated her 11th birthday and has been in remission for a little more than two years.
Anna-Coleman Yelverton was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer that attacks soft tissue when she was 8 years old. She has been in remission for two years now.
In addition to battles with cancer, Anna-Coleman also has severe scoliosis. She recently had a back surgery and her mother, Jennifer Thomason said she is recovering well.
When Anna-Coleman was first diagnosed with cancer, the community rallied in support of her and was there for the family through their journeys back and forth to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham.
“This community loves Anna-Coleman,” Jennifer said. “Not a day goes by, when I am sitting at my desk at the bank that people don’t ask ‘how’s our girl doing?’”
For Jennifer, raising awareness for childhood cancer awareness has been very important. This past childhood cancer awareness month, Thomason sold t-shirts to support A-Team ministries in Birmingham.
Anna-Coleman holds a Demopolis Times magazine from when she was undergoing treatment.
Through community support, Thomason was able to donate a check of $1,225 to the ministry, that aids families of cancer patients.
Jennifer said since Anna-Coleman hit the two year mark of being in remission, they now only have to go for scans every six months.
Anna-Coleman and her mom always try to make it to Marengo County’s Relay for Life as the battle against cancer is very personal for them.
“We are definitely going to try to make it this year if she feels up to it,” Jennifer said.
