Madison Duckworth of Demopolis recently completed an internship with the UAB School of Medicine, Huntsville Regional Medical Campus.

The eight-week Huntsville Rural Pre-medical Internship is a highly competitive program and provides pre-med students from rural areas with a broad exposure to medicine. The idea is to hopefully inspire these students to careers as physicians in rural Alabama.

Duckworth, 20, is a senior at UAB, majoring in molecular biology. She is the daughter of Tracy Keener and Marty Duckworth.

The internship centered on students spending 150 hours shadowing and learning from doctors and other medical professionals at UAB School of Medicine-Huntsville as well as private physicians in Huntsville and the students’ home towns.

Locally, Duckworth worked with Dr. Keith Dismukes.

The students also attended lectures on a variety of subjects ranging from farm injury to hospice care as well as field trips, including visits to a motorhome manufacturer and a chicken processing plant.

The Huntsville Rural Pre-medical Internship program is offered every summer at the UAB School of Medicine-Huntsville Rural Medicine Campus.

Eligible students must be from rural or small-town areas of Alabama, have completed at least their sophomore year of college and have a demonstrated interest in becoming a physician.

Students can learn more about this program by e-mailing Paula Clawson at pclawson@uab.edu.
