The Demopolis Public Library celebrated National Library Card Sign Up Month in September with a contest for teachers at Westside Elementary and U.S. Jones Elementary.

Teachers encouraged students and parents to visit the library and sign up for a library card. Stephanie Pittman at U.S. Jones and Nan Dollar at Westside Elementary were the winning teachers. They had the most students register for a library card. They won a $25 gift card from Wal-Mart and a gift certificate for a pedicure from the Colonnade Salon and Day Spa. Their classes were given a large bag of candy to share.

During the month of September, the library had 76 students and adults get a library card. A library card is the best school supply you can get your child and the smartest card to have. It gives you access to books, eBooks, audiobooks, computers and internet access, online homework help and it’s free.

“I am so excited to win this,” Dollar said. “I really encouraged my students to visit the library to get a library card. I also plan to encourage them to visit the library and read over the Christmas break. I remember visiting the library when it was located on Cedar Street where the Board of Education is located now. I would check out 10 books each week for my students when I first starting teaching. I have been a huge library supporter since then.”

The Friends of the Library also participated in National Library Card Sign Up Month by purchasing a subscription to Tumble Books. Tumble Books offers fiction and nonfiction eBooks for children and educational videos. The resource is free for teachers, parents, and students. Tumble Books also work on iPads and other devices.
