Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital Auxiliary volunteer Edith Whitfield will be honored next week as part of a program that will recognize the auxiliary’s 40 years of service and the hospital’s 60th anniversary.

Whitfield said she really didn’t think about how long she would be part of the Auxiliary, but 40 years is hard to imagine.

“My husband [Dr. Fred Whitfield] was a physician here, so I was involved in the medical part even before I joined the Auxiliary,” she said. “I never really thought about how long I would be involved, though.”

She said the Auxiliary has helped the hospital grow by raising money to purchase new equipment as well as helping with landscaping.

“I’ve enjoyed my connections here,” she said. “It’s been a real pleasure to me.”

Whitfield, 97, remains active with the Auxiliary and plans to continue volunteering in the future.

The ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 21 will recognize Whitfield, the Auxiliary’s 40th anniversary as well as the hospital’s 60th anniversary. It starts at 5:30 p.m. in Whitfield’s main lobby.
