Demopolis Mayor Mike Grayson signed a proclamation Thursday morning to recognize Perioperative Nurse Week as Nov. 11-15.

Perioperative nurses specialize in the care of patients immediately before, during and after surgical and other invasive procedures. They serve in settings ranging from traditional hospital-based operating rooms to ambulatory surgical centers, working to provide the safest care possible for patients undergoing surgery.

AORN, the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses, started this week to recognize the work done by perioperative nurses across the country.

Donna Pope, nurse manager of the Surgical Services Department at BWWMH, said this week helps promote perioperative nurses and the work they do.

“This week helps recognize perioperative nurses and how our staff promotes safe patient care,” Pope said. “It also helps us promote our organizations as a group that supports safe patient care.”
