Henry L. “Jet” Atkins

Henry L. “Jet” Atkins, 75, of Saywerville, passed away Monday, Feb. 10 in Meridianville.

He was born April 29, 1938, to the late Redden Carl and Ada Lee Stockman Atkins. He graduated from Lamar County High School in 1957 and attended Auburn University for two years. He entered the Alabama National Guard in May 1955 and was transferred into the Army Reserve where he was honorably discharged with 32 years of service. On July 9, 1962, he was employed by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Law Enforcement Division. He retired on Jan. 1, 1995, after achieving the rank of Captain and serving as District 5 Supervisor.

Atkins was preceded in death by both his parents; three sisters, Sue Johnson, Faye Cooper and Mary Leaf; and one brother, Ben Atkins.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 18, at the Vernon City Complex with Kenneth Randolph officiating. Burial followed at Furnace Hill under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home of Vernon.

He is survived by his wife, Bobbie Jean Atkins; his son, Henry Andrew Atkins; his daughter-in-law, Jennifer Atkins; four grandchildren, Carson L. Thweatt, Morgan B. Hawthorn, Andrew T. Atkins and Georganna R. Atkins; one brother, William Wayne “Buddy” (Debbie) Atkins; and a number of life long friends, associates, co-workers, nieces and nephews.
