Scarlett Wright belted her second home run of the year in the top of the eighth inning to give West Alabama a 6-5 victory over Lee in the Gulf South Conference series finale on Sunday.

West Alabama lost the series in a doubleheader sweep on Saturday, but improved to 14-12 overall and 5-7 in the GSC with the win in game three. Lee fell to 12-12 and 6-6.

“We got timely hits today, and that was the name of the game,” said UWA head coach Will Atkinson.

“We struggled in the bottom half of the first inning, but battled back to maintain the lead for most of the game. Scarlett had excellent at bats all day, but she picked out one she could hit hard and sent it out of the park. I’m really proud of her and the team’s effort today.”

The Tigers had the lead on three separate occasions in the game. Leadoff hitter Anna Shartzer homered in her first at bat in the top of the first to put UWA up 1-0.

Back-to-back hits by Lydia North and Rebecca Schick in the top of the third gave the Tigers a 4-2 lead. North singled to bring in one run, while Schick doubled to bring in two.

Ana Coscorrosa hit a two run single in the bottom of the first to counter Shartzer’s opening homer. In the bottom of the fifth, Coscorrosa homered with two runners on base to take the Tiger’s lead away for the second time and put Lee up 5-4.

Shartzer sent the game into extra innings with a sacrifice fly to left field that brought Miriah Chavez in to score in the sixth.

Wright’s eighth inning home run was her only hit of the game. Wright finished with two runs. Shartzer finished with two runs and two RBI.

Taylor Tucker (1-2) gave up the home run to Coscorrosa after entering in the fifth inning. She battled back with three strikeouts through four innings, including striking out Coscorrosa with two runners on base in the seventh inning. She ended with the win allowing only three hits and one earned run.

“One pitch changed the game, but Tucker did an excellent job of battling back,” Atkinson said. “She logged some great innings and got some big strikeouts to get the win out of the bullpen.”

Angie Hughes (7-6) pitched through all eight innings in her third appearance of the series. She took the loss allowing five earned runs on five hits and walking 11 batters.

The Tigers will return to action as they travel to take on Tuskegee on Tuesday in a non-conference double-header. Game one is set for 1 p.m.

“Hopefully we can continue with the effort we had today at Tuskegee in two days,” said Atkinson. “We need to continue to be patient at the plate and get those timely hits.”
