The Demopolis City Schools Board of Education approved a bid for an upcoming lighting project in the school system.

The bid to install energy-efficient lights in the gymnasiums at U.S. Jones Elementary School, Demopolis Middle School and Demopolis High School was awarded to Lime Green Inc. out of Huntsville. The total cost of the project is $26,975, and $15,000 will be covered by an energy grant from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs. Superintendent Dr. Al Griffin said he had $12,000 allotted for the project, so it will be covered as expected.

The board also approved an amendment to the energy upgrades for Demopolis High School during Friday morning’s meeting. Griffin said it wouldn’t be necessary for the new geothermal air conditioning units to be installed at the DHS gym because the A/C units there are fairly new already.

“The air conditioning units at the gym were replaced when the auditorium was added to that building, so they’re still new,” Griffin said. “We’re going to take that out of the plan for the geothermal units.”

The cost estimate for the project is $1,865,750, and Griffin said that is only a few thousand dollars more than what is available.

“We can make some adjustments to cut a couple thousand if we need to,” Griffin said.

Also during the meeting, the board approved an agreement to allow the Two Rivers Arts Council to use the DHS auditorium this weekend. TRAC will host The Montgomery Ballet, who will perform scenes from act two of Swan Lake on Sunday, April 6 at 3 p.m.
