Sky lanterns are released in memory and honor of those who have battled cancer at last year’s Relay For Life.

Relay For Life of Marengo County will be held Friday at 6 p.m., and luminarias and sky lanterns are still available.

Luminarias are available for a $5 donation in memory or in honor of cancer survivors. The luminarias will have the name of the person they are dedicated to on them and will be lit throughout the evening along Relay’s walking track.

Sky lanterns are also available for a $15 donation in memory of or honor of those who have battled cancer. Volunteers will release the lanterns into the sky during the event.

Luminarias and sky lanterns can be purchased at the event, from any of the Relay teams or online at http://bit.ly/SxKT1J.

A survivor’s banquet will be held prior to the start of Relay at Rooster Hall.

More than 200 invitations were sent out to cancer survivors from Marengo County, according to Relay volunteer Cecil Williamson.

Survivors, who can bring a guest, should arrive at Rooster Hall by 4:15 p.m. to register. They will be served dinner, along with birthday cake. There will also be door prizes given out.

The American Cancer Society, which puts on Relay For Life events across the country, is “The Official Sponsor of Birthdays.”

Survivors can show up for dinner but should call ahead if possible to reserve a T-shirt.

After dinner, the survivors will go to George Franks Ball Field to take the first lap at Relay.
