Elderly citizens are too often the victims of abuse, neglect and exploitation.

To support World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15, the Marengo County Department of Human Resources and Harriet’s House are planning a special event. The Glow Stick 5K Run/Walk will take place at ChiLLy Fest Park in Linden on June 6.

Registration is $25 and will begin at 7 p.m. The race will begin an hour later at 8 p.m.

Early registration forms are available at the Marengo County DHR office, located at 701 Shiloh St. in Linden. To receive a T-shirt, registration forms must be completed and turned in by Friday, May 23.

All proceeds go to the Adult Protective Services and Harriet’s House, a nonprofit shelter for victims of domestic abuse.

Prizes and awards will be given to the top overall male and female and to the top three individuals in the following age groups: below 15, 15-24, 25-44, 35-44,45-54, 55-64 and 65 plus.

“Because the elderly are often dependent on others for their care and may become isolated, they are primary targets for abuse, neglect and exploitation,” said Ellen Wallace, Director of Marengo County’s Department of Human Resources.

In 2013, members of the Alabama Council for the Prevention of Elder Abuse worked together to have the Protecting Alabama’s Elders Act passed into law.

The act has provided help for the victims and has allowed Alabama law enforcement the proper tools to punish individuals guilty of committing crimes against the elderly, according to Wallace.

Abuse of the elderly is rarely reported. With the help of the citizens of Marengo County, DHR can protect our adult citizens against neglect. If you notice or suspect the mistreatment of an elderly person, do not hesitate — please call Marengo County DHR at (334) 295-7214.

“No matter how difficult the challenge, with the help of our community partners, our Adult Protective Service workers investigate reports and arrange protection. They are strongly committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of the elderly,” Wallace said.
