Marengo Academy 2014 class leaves with accolades

The 2014 class of Marengo Academy graduated Friday night.

The commencement address was given by Tim Drinkard, a Marengo Academy alumnus.

He reminded the students of who got them to this point in their lives and to live their college years by the same rules their parents taught them.

Nicole Parten, the salutatorian, thanked the community and her parents for their support and guidance.

The valedictorian Joseph Sammons gave a stirring speech in which he quoted Thomas Jefferson.

“If you want to know who you are, don’t think. Act,” he said.

Sammons closed with a traditional Marengo Academy war cry of “Hook ‘em Horns!”

Overall, more than $40,000 in scholarships were awarded from the University of West Alabama, Auburn University and Marion Military Institute.

Along with their academic achievements the Class of 2014 also accumulated many athletic awards, including AISA Football State Championship, girls basketball state championship, boys basketball state runner-up, softball state runner-up and baseball state runner-up.
