Former Demopolis Police Department Assistant Chief Robert “Bobby” Meigs has died in a car accident, according to DPD Chief Tommie Reese.

Meigs died at UAB Hospital Thursday morning. The two-car accident accident happened Tuesday afternoon along Interstate 20/59 near Fosters.

Reese said Meigs was instrumental in his career at an early age through the Junior Police Program. Reese, along with many other former and current officers, joined the department under Meigs.

Meigs also worked with AmStar Ambulance Service for several years after retirement, according to Reese.

“His service to this community went farther than DPD.” Reese said. “He was a dedicated servant and will truly be missed. We’re asking everyone to remember the family in your thoughts and prayers.”
