The Demopolis Board of Education took the next step in the $1.9 million HVAC project at Demopolis High School on Monday night.

The board awarded the HVAC equipment installation contract to Cooper Brothers for $327,389. The project is funded through a Qualified Zone Academy Bond.

The board also awarded a formal bus bid to Transportation South for the purchase of two used buses. The board agreed to purchase the buses during a previous meeting, but had to bid it out before making a purchase. There was only one bid for the buses, which was the same one they received in July. The two Thomas Built buses will be purchased at $59,000 each.

During Monday night’s meeting, the board also approved a lease of Canon copy machines for the central office. The 48-month lease will cost $276.62 per month.

In other business, the board tabled a discussion about a memorandum of understanding with the Demopolis Police Department. The memorandum stated that DPD and the Demopolis City Schools share the expenses for salary and training of a school resource officer. The board did not have a problem with sharing the cost, but they wanted to get a dollar figure and clarification of the memorandum before accepting it.

The board also approved the following personnel recommendations from Superintendent Dr. Al Griffin:

•Remove Rodney Jackson from assistant varsity basketball line item on the supplements form. There was an oversight, according to Griffin, and Jackson shouldn’t have been listed as both head coach and assistant coach.

•Accept resignation of Sgt. Tim Jordan as JROTC instructor

•Post JROTC position until filled with a seven day minimum

•Accept resignation of Jennifer Roemen as central office cleaning on the supplements form

•Accept resignation of Donna Calhoun as U.S. Jones reading coach as of Aug. 29

•Post USJ reading coach position through Aug. 26

•Renew speech services contract with Dana Eddins

•Assign Jeremy Silcox as Demopolis Middle School head baseball coach on supplement form instead of Brian Bradley

•Assign Brian Bradley as DMS assistant baseball coach instead of Jeremy Silcox

•Remove Angela Sanders as both DMS softball and DMS girls basketball on the supplement form

In other business, the board also took the following action:

•Approve overnight and out-of-state travel for board attorney Alex Braswell to attend the National School Boards Association 2014 School Law Practice Seminar in Denver, Colo., on Oct 9-11, and absorb travel expenses

•Revise the National Board Certification Assistance policy to require the school system to give $1,300 per applicant instead of $2,600 per applicant

•Renew contract with Genesis Rehabilitation for occupational and physical therapy

•Approve payroll and expenditures for the month of July

The next regularly scheduled Demopolis Board of Education meeting is set for Monday, Sept. 15 at 5:15 p.m.
