Longhorns fall to Bessemer Academy in season opener

Marengo Academy opened their 2014 campaign on the road at Bessemer Academy on Thursday with a 30-13 loss.

The defending AISA Class A champs turned the ball over six times in the loss, including three fumbles lost and three interceptions.

Bessemer Academy took a 16-0 lead into the locker room at halftime after scoring a minute into the game on a two-yard run by Brandon Cook.

Bessemer added their second score of the half on a 64-yard pass from P.J. Garrett to Josh Boles.

In the third quarter, the Longhorns got on the board with a 46-yard pass from Tyler Barkley to Shade Pritchett.

Bessemer added two more scores before Marengo would get back on the board. Sidney Moore scored on a 13-yard run and Garrett connected with Peyton Ramzey on a 27-yard pass to push their lead to 30-6.

Marengo Academy scored their final touchdown with 25 seconds to play on a 15-yard run by Josh Holifield.

Holifield ended the game with 86 yards rushing and a touchdown on 20 carries. Pritchett had four receptions for 87 yards and a TD in the game.

Defensively for the Longhorns, Carson Huckabee had 10 tackles including one-and-a-half sacks, and Hayden Hall had 10 tackles and a sack.

Bessemer only outgained the Longhorns 261 yards to 226, but the turnovers by Marengo had the biggest effect on the game.
