The Alabama Department of Revenue on Monday warned taxpayers to be on the lookout for a phone scam using the department’s name.

State Revenue Commissioner Julie Magee issued a statement saying that her office has received several tips from taxpayers who received automated calls informing them that the department is about to sue them, and that they should call 206-201-2445.

“All calls requesting a call back to (206) 201-2445 are fraudulent and should be ignored,” Magee said. “This is not a legitimate request or company.”

According to a release from Magee’s office, the phone number is in no way affiliated with the Alabama Department of Revenue. Any legitimate employee calling from the Alabama Department of Revenue will not ask for a social security number or bank account information. No taxpayer will be informed about any litigation over the phone.

The calls are likely attempts to “phish,” or obtain information about taxpayers that can be used later in identity thefts.
Anyone who receives one of these calls is asked to contact the Alabama Department of Revenue at (334) 242-3012.
