Lucy Couch Spencer

Lucy Couch Spencer, 81, of Demopolis, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 1.

Visitation will be held Saturday, March 7, at 11 a.m. with funeral services to follow at noon at the First United Methodist Church in Demopolis.

She graduated from Scottsboro High School, then earned her Bachelor of Science and M.Ed. from the University of Alabama. She taught elementary school for 25 years, devoting herself to students in Montgomery and Demopolis.

She was an active member of FUMC, where she taught children’s Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. She was also active in the United Methodist Women and the Emmaus Community. She enjoyed her long-time memberships in the Book Club and the Music Study Club.

Her loving, compassionate ways are remembered by her family, friends and former students. She always had a smile for everyone.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Malcolm and Zera Couch; brothers, Jimmie and Graham; and great-grandson, Sam Fletcher.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Jim; children, James (Tyra), Gayle Spencer Flowers, Ted (Denice) of Gardendale, Michael (Leslie) of Pinson; grandchildren, Melissa (Kenneth) Dobson, Danielle (David) Fletcher, Colby (Courtney) Turberville, Courtney Flowers, Ryan and Jay, and Ethan and Caroline; great-grandchildren, Zoe and Gavin Fredericks; sister, Barbara Fowler; nieces and nephews, Lauren (Mark) Salter, Ansley, Caleb and Joshua Salter; and numerous cousins.

Active pallbearers will be Jack Cooley, Todd Gates, John Haynes, Ed Newell, Don White and Durwood White. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the United Methodist Women.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Demopolis.
