Volunteers gathered on June 19 to be a part of a national day of volunteering. Volunteers participated in the United Ways service day called Day of Action. United Way Day of Action is an invitation for people and organizations around the world to live united. In Marengo County, volunteers gave their time to help the Braxton Senior Day Care and Westside Elementary School.
This was Marengo County’s first time to participate in Day of Action. Kathryn Pearson, United Way of West Alabama’s AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America), worked to recruit and mobilize volunteers to participate.
“I feel volunteering is essential to building a stronger community. It is more than just living in your community; it is the feeling of knowing you are truly making a difference and putting a smile on people’s faces,” said Pearson.
At Braxton Senior Day Care, volunteers worked to stain the back deck, paint the front porch, and clean up around the center. At Westside, volunteers gave the front entrance a face lift by trimming, pulling weeds, and mulching around the bushes at the front.
“We love our volunteers and the effort they put in to make these projects happen at our sites,” Pearson said.
