The Demopolis Chamber of Commerce and Demopolis High School are joining together for a program to benefit both the chamber and students.
A group of eight students have been selected to serve as the first Chamber Ambassadors. The ambassador program allows for DHS juniors and seniors to be involved with chamber activities as volunteers while also providing them opportunities to learn about local businesses and community involvement.
To be selected, the students had to go through an application process that included providing two letters of recommendation as well as being interviewed by representatives of the chamber.
“We want this to be a learning process for them, so it is set up just like if they were interviewing for a job,” said Chamber Director Ashley Coplin. “It will help them learn what it is like to be part of the workforce.”
The group will be involved in all aspects of the chamber, according to Coplin, including attending board meetings as well as helping to plan and participating in logistics for events like Christmas on the River.
“This will provide them the chance to get outside of their comfort zone while representing our schools, the chamber and our city as a whole. For them, they will be making valuable contacts that could lead to valuable references for their future in the workforce,” Coplin said.
The ambassadors will be present during the chamber’s 100th banquet to be held Thursday, Feb. 25, 6 p.m., at the Demopolis Civic Center.
