Laney to take oath as new mayor

John Laney is set to take the oath of office as the new mayor of Demopolis on Monday.
The Demopolis City Council will hold an organizational meeting on Monday, Nov. 7. Prior to that meeting, beginning at 8 a.m., the official swearing in ceremony for elected officials, including the mayor and members of the city council will take place at Rooster Hall.
District Judge Vince Deas will swear in Laney as mayor as well as councilmembers Charles Jones Jr., Nathan Hardy, Harris Nelson, Bill Meador Jr., and Cleveland Cole.
Following the swearing in ceremony, the council will meet. This meeting was moved from the regular council meeting date of Thursday, Nov. 3.
During the meeting, the mayor and council will establish the time and place for upcoming regular council meetings. Also to be considered will be rules of procedure, establishment of city committees, and appointments to those committees.
The new administration will discuss salaries for administrative officers and employees and will consider the appointment of the city attorney.
