Harriet Virginia Spence

Harriet Virginia Spence, age 71 of Demopolis, AL died November 25, 2016 at her home. She was born August 31, 1945 in Selma, AL to George C. Spence, Sr. and Clara Mae Spence. She attended First United Methodist Church in Demopolis and in Robertsdale, AL. Miss Spence was a retired teacher of 40 years, having taught physical education and health, she coached softball, basketball, and volleyball and was a cheer leader sponsor.  She received her bachelor’s degee from Livingston University and her master’s degree in 1975 at the University of South Alabama. She was a member of the Phi Mu Sorority at Livingston University, and was a member of the Robertsdale High School Hall of Fame in 2000, she was also a member of ADK Teachers Honor Society, an Alabama Beta Upsilon Educator of the Year in 2007.

She is survived by her niece, Jennifer (Frankie) Spence Overstreet; 2 nephews, John Benjamin (Tracy) Spence and Jeffrey Lee (Elizabeth) Spence; 7 great nephews, Allen Overstreet, Spence Overstreet, Tyler Overstreet, Sam Herport, Douglas Cooper, Elliott Thrasher, and Finn Spence; two great nieces, Pam Bourgeois and Reagan Spence.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George C. Spence, Sr. and Clara Mae Spence, and her brother George C. Spence, Jr.

Funeral services were held at Demopolis First United Methodist Church on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at 11:00 am with Rev. David Willis officiating. Burial was at Paynes Chapel Cemetery in Dixons Mills, AL.

Active Pallbearers were: Frankie Overstreet, Spence Overstreet, Tyler Overstreet, Jeffrey Spence, Benjie Spence, Allen Overstreet.
