Marengo County voters went to the polls on Tuesday to vote in the special election to fill a U.S. Senate seat while Demopolis voters also voted on the renewal of a long-standing 3 mill property tax for Demopolis City Schools.

In Demopolis, 75.8 percent of those who voted in Tuesday’s election voted to renew the 3 mill tax in support of the city school system. A total of 1,534 voted “yes” on the measure while 489 voted to discontinue the tax.

With the approval, the tax will remain in effect for another 10 years.

According to school officials, the tax generates about $225,000 annually to support educational services.

In the race for U.S. Senator, Marengo County voters went in favor of Democrat Doug Jones over Republican candidate Roy Moore. Jones finished in Marengo County with 4,495 to Moore’s 2,804. There were 62 write-in votes.
