While Marengo County political races were decided in this summer’s primary, voters still had many statewide choices to decide as polls opened Tuesday for the general election.

Those who ran unopposed for Marengo County seats in the general election are: County Commissioner District 1, Fred Armstead; County Commission District 3, Terry Hinton; County Commission District 5, Michael Thompson; Marengo County BOE District 1, Freddie Charleston; Marengo County BOE District 2, Mike McAlpine; District Court Judge, Vince Deas; Circuit Clerk, Kenny Freeman; Probate Judge, Laurie Shoultz Hall; Marengo County Sheriff, Richard Bates and Marengo County Coroner, John Scott.

While Republicans carried the day in statewide races, the majority of Marengo County voters supported Democrats

For the governor’s seat Democrat Walt Maddox won in Marengo County over Republican Kay Ivey. However, Ivey has been declared the statewide winner in that race.

Marengo County voters supported Democrats down the ballot, including Will Ainsworth for Lt. Governor and Joseph Siegleman for Attorney General.

Incumbent Terri Sewell will continue to serve as the U.S. Representative for the 7 District, as she ran unopposed, as did State Senator Bobby Singleton and State Representative A.J. McCampbell.

Malika Sanders-Fortier, daughter of retiring state representative Hank Sanders, won in Marengo County over Independent Mark Story.

For Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, county voters selected Bob Vance over Tom Parker.

In thevote for a local amendment specifically for Marengo County dealing with golf cart usage, 3,438 voted “yes” and 3,291 voted “no.”

With 20 of 21 precincts in as of presstime, 8,807 ballots were cast. Of those 4,111 were straight Democrat while 2,442 were straight Republican.
