The roosters are coming to Demopolis again and this time it’s even more special.

The Marengo County Historical Society’s annual Rooster Day will be held April 13 and this year marks the 100 anniversary of the original Rooster Auction held as a fundraiser to construct what locals refer to as “Rooster Bridge.”

Each year, the historical society organizes the event that has quickly become a popular day event for locals, as well as a destination for out-of-town visitors. Rooster Day is fun-filled with arts and crafts, games and activities for children, the Cock’s Crow 5K run and, of course, a re-enactment of that 1919 auction that gained the attention of celebrities and a president to our little part of the world.

Of course, it takes a lot of roosters to create a successful Rooster Day. Many who come out to enjoy the day appreciate the work and effort of those with the historical society. But, the society is counting on the rest of us to do our part. Many local businesses are already signed up “Rooster Boosters” and other community members are working additional projects associated with the event. One of the best ways to help and show our support is by simply coming out and enjoying the many activities that will be featured on April 13.

The benefits of festivals and other events like Rooster Day are numerous. These events draw people to a community where they may stay in a hotel, buy gas, eat at a restaurant, or make a purchase at a locally-owned shop.
