Those who enjoy driving golf carts on city streets within the City of Demopolis will now need to meet certain requirements and have a street decal issued by the city. To assist residents in meeting the requirements, an event will be held Saturday at Westside Elementary where officials will inspect carts and have decals available.

A new ordinance approved by the Demopolis City Council calls for any golf cart driven on city streets to meet certain requirements, including having headlights and brakelights, efficient brakes, and red reflective devices on the front and rear. There is also a maximum capacity based on the number of seats in the cart. Liability insurance is also required. All rules of the road must be followed, including those pertaining to driving under the influence.

There are also limits on who may drive a golf cart on city streets. Only those holding a valid driver’s license may drive a cart on city streets and no one under 16.

Saturday’s event at WES will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and decals will be available to purchase for $6 to cover the remainder of 2019. The cost to register a golf cart annually is $12.

Those in violation of the ordinance will face fines not less than $50 and no more than $200. A cart may also be impounded and held at the owner’s expense.
