SINGLE-ELIMINATION CHAMPIONSHIP PAIRINGS SET

The Single-Elimination Championship pairings are set for the 2019 Babe Ruth World Series at the Demopolis SportsPlex.

The championship series beings Tuesday, Aug. 13 and continues through Thursday, Aug. 15. All games will be played at Webb Field. Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for children each day.

The top three teams to advance from the Tombigbee Pool are Chandler (Arizona), Broomall-Newtown (Penn.) and Jeffersontown (Ky.).

The top three teams to advance from the Black Warrior Pool are Fort Caroline (Florida), Eagle Pass (Texas) and West Linn (Oregon).

Chandler (4-0) is the No. 1 seed from the after going undefeated in Tombigbee Pool play. Chandler closed pool play with a 4-3 win over West Alabama. Chandler averaged seven runs per game in pool play.

Fort Caroline (4-0) won the Black Warrior Pool, closing with run-rule wins over Nashua and Eagle Pass. Fort Caroline has outscored the opposition 48-6 in the tournament.

2019 BABE RUTH WORLD SERIES August 12, 2019

WEST LINN ADVANCES WITH 3-0 WIN OVER NASHUA

West Linn (Oregon) right-hander Max Allen fired a complete-game shutout in the 3-0 win over Nashua (NH) in the final game of pool play at the 2019 Babe Ruth World Series at the Demopolis SportsPlex.

After dropping its first two games, West Linn (2-2) rebounded to win the next two games to advance to the single-elimination championship round. West Linn will face Broomall-Newtown (Penn.) on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Allen allowed only four hits in seven scoreless innings. He walked two and struck out five batters. Allen allowed two hits in the seventh inning, but preserved the shutout when he got S. Murray to ground with runners and second and third base to end the game. Allen was named the Ron Tellefsen Player of the Game Award winner.

West Linn took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Jack Fillion’s RBI ground out scored Jake Holmes.

Nolan Mederos was equally impressive for Nashua. He worked five innings and allowed one unearned run on three hits with three walks and one strikeout. He was named the Ron Tellefsen Player of the Game Award winner.

West Linn added two insurance runs in the sixth inning to take a 3-0 lead. Ryan VandenBrink ripped a two-run double that scored Aidan Duea and Holmes.

VandenBrink finished 2-for-2 with one double and two RBIs. Holmes went 1-for-2 with two runs and one walk.

 

CHANDLER REMAINS UNDEFEATED WITH COMEBACK WIN

Chandler (Arizona) scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh inning for a 4-3 win over host West Alabama to cap an undefeated record in pool play at the 2019 Babe Ruth World Series at Demopolis SportsPlex.

Chandler (4-0) is the No. 1 seed from the after going undefeated in Tombigbee Pool play. Chandler will face the winner of the Jeffersontown-Eagle Pass game on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. Jeffersontown and Eagle Pass square off on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. in the single-elimination championship round.

Ryan Kucherak led off the seventh inning with an infield hit and then moved third base on a two-base throwing error by West Alabama pitcher Whit Jockisch. Kucherak scored the winning run on a wild pitch. Jockisch (0-1) was charged with the loss.

Trailing 3-0 after three innings, Chandler tied the game with three runs in the top fourth of West Alabama Mack Bradley, who was making his second start in four days. Cooper Brass ripped a three-run double into right-center field to tie the game at 3-3.

West Alabama (2-2) took a 3-0 lead after two innings without benefit of a hit.

Ryan Baumgarner reached on a fielder’s choice in the first inning and stole second and third base, before scoring on a throwing error by catcher Hayden Estes. Chandler made five errors in the game. 

West Alabama extended its lead to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the second inning. Kevin McElroy walked and eventually scored on a passed ball and Montgomery Freeman plated a run with a ground out. McElroy was 1-for-2 with one run and one walk.

Will Shelor (1-0) earned the win for Chandler with two scoreless inning and five strikeouts. Andrew Griffin worked perfect seventh inning, with one strikeout, for the save.

Brass (Chandler) and McElroy (West Alabama) were the Ron Tellefsen Player of the Game Award winners.

 

FORT CAROLINE CRUISES PAST EAGLE PASS, 11-1

Fort Caroline (Florida) continued its offensive assault with 11-1 win over Eagle Pass (Texas) in the final game of pool play for both teams at the 2019 Babe Ruth World Series at the Demopolis SportsPlex. The game was stopped in the sixth inning due to the 10-run rule.

Fort Caroline (4-0) had a perfect record in Black Warrior Pool play, including a pair of run-rule wins over Nashua (NH) and Eagle Pass. Fort Caroline has outscored the opposition 48-6 in the tournament.

Fort Caroline advances to the single-elimination championship series. Fort Caroline will play again on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against an opponent to be determined.

Fort Caroline set the tone early with four runs the bottom of the first inning. The team scored at least one run in five of the six innings and had a least one base runner in every inning.

Jimmie Broughton had an RBI double and Malachi Witherspoon added a sacrifice fly in the opening fame.

Parker Sedwick plated a run with an RBI single in the second inning to make it a 6-0 game.

Eagle Pass (3-1) scored its only run in the third inning. Isaac Stanwick ripped a triple into the right field corner and scored on Luis Kancheff’s RBI double to close the gap to 6-1.

Witherspoon added his second sac fly of the game in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 7-0. Cooper Whited followed with a two-run double to extend the lead to 9-1.

Sedgwick had a two-out RBI double in the fifth to make it a 10-1 game.  Ben Green scored the final run in the sixth on the throwing error by the catcher.

Whited won the Ron Tellefsen Player of the Game Award for his efforts on the mound and the plate. White worked five innings and Eagle Pass to one run and two hits with two walks and three strikeouts. At the plate, he was 1-for-3 with one double and two RBIs.

Sedgwick went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, one double and two RBIs.

Stanwick earned the Ron Tellefsen Player of the Game Award for Eagle Pass. He was 1-for-3 with one run and one triple.

Eagle Pass is the No. 2 seed in the Black Warrior Pool and advances to the single-elimination championship series. eagle Pass will play Tuesday at 7 p.m. against an opponent to be determined.

BROOMALL-NEWTOWN TRIO BLANKS WAHPETON, 4-0

Owen Mathis, Mike Govan and Mike Freeman combined on a two-hit shutout as Broomall-Newtown (Penn.) blanked Wahpeton (ND) 4-0 in the final game of pool play at the 2019 Babe Ruth World Series at the Demopolis SportsPlex.

Mathis started the game and retired all six batters he faced, with one strikeout. Govan followed with three scoreless innings. He allowed one hit and struck out six batters. Freeman allowed one hit in two scoreless innings, with one strikeout.

Broomall-Newtown (3-1) finishes as the No. 2 seed in the Black Warrior Pool and advances to the single-elimination championship series. Broomall-Newtown will face Jeffersontown (Ky.) on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Broomall-Newtown scored two runs in the first inning and sixth innings.

Mathis and Alex Bruno both doubled in the first inning. Mathis scored on Bruno’s double and Bruno scored on Aiden Jackson’s RBI single.

Broomall-Newtown scored two runs in the sixth without a hit. Jackson was hit by pitch and later scored when Josh Freiling was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Justin Brennan plated the final run with a sacrifice fly.

Riley Thimjon and Jackson Fliflet had the only two hits for Whapeton.

Bruno and Fliflet were the Ron Tellefsen Player of the Game Award winners.
