Marengo County voters went to the polls Tuesday and voted in favor of a 4-mill ad valorem tax to benefit Whitfield Regional Hospital.

Uncertified vote counts from Tuesday’s election saw 2,679 vote in favor of the tax while 1,777 voted against. Of the ballots cast, just over 60 percent voted for the tax while 30.8 percent voted against. The results do not include provisional ballots.

Hospital officials said prior to the special election that if passed funds received through the tax would be used for the development of a long-term capital plan, especially in the area of building improvements and maintenance as well as medical technology updates.

Under Alabama law, funds raised through the tax can only be used for the hospital.
